Career/Bio
Do you ever think of life as “before Maine” and “after Maine”?
Before Maine for me:
A short story: I had the luck of sailing from Ireland to Portugal on a classic yacht called Brilliant. I was thrilled to discover that the first mate on that trip and I both worked in the environmental movement in Washington, D.C. Years later, we caught up for lunch at the Hawk and Dove, and she said to me: “I’m quitting my job to go be full-time mate on Brilliant. There’s one spot left on the paid crew, for the cook. Come with us.” I said: “Well, that’s lovely and we both know I have no idea how to cook.” By the time lunch was over, I was convinced. Walked back to the office, called the captain who was delighted and more than slightly mystified that I wanted the cook job–and then I quit my job at the national Sierra Club to work on a sailboat.
That leap set the course for everything that followed.
Why Maine
Maine quickly proved to be the rare place where I could pursue serious, meaningful work while living near some of the best places in the world to sail. That lunchtime decision eventually led me to Maine – to deckhand/cook jobs on some incredible boats, to leading state house and congressional campaigns, to meeting my husband while racing to Monhegan, working for the Roux Institute and learning heaps about AI and being race crew on the 12 metre Gleam. Now, I put it all together—strategy, connections, partnerships, and grit—to support growth at the Maine Trust for Local News, the state’s largest source of local news.
Away from the Keyboard
Living in Limerick (an hour from Portland) means I stay sane by always having a project going—usually in the garden, or in the kitchen. And I’m always looking for the next project, so please send ideas.
Lets talk
If I had one piece of advice it would be: do what you love and your people will find you.
Political organizing, partnerships at Roux, and working in advertising has connected me to some incredible people in this state. If you have an idea, need an introduction, or want to talk about big, ambitious things—reach out. I’d love to connect.
Thank you for making this community special, everyone! See you on Slack.
